Making the Most of the "Off-Season": Winter Equipment Maintenance

11/11/2025 - By Adam Ellison

As temperatures drop and turf growth slows, the pace on the golf course changes. For superintendents, greenskeepers, and maintenance staff, the winter months bring a rare opportunity: time to step back, regroup, and prepare for the year ahead.

Focus on Equipment Maintenance

One of the most productive ways to use this downtime is by focusing on equipment maintenance. A well-planned winter maintenance program can prevent costly delays, improve application accuracy, and set your team up for a smooth and efficient spring.

1. Inspect and Repair Equipment Before the Busy Season

The slower winter months are the ideal time to evaluate your equipment fleet and make necessary repairs. Begin by conducting a full inspection of mowers, utility vehicles, sprayers, spreaders, and other frequently used tools. Check for worn belts, dull blades, fluid leaks, and damaged hoses. Addressing small issues now—before spring growth begins—helps prevent breakdowns during the critical maintenance season.

In addition to routine fixes, consider using this time to complete larger repairs or refurbishments that are difficult to tackle during peak play months. Whether it’s replacing mower reels, upgrading parts, or sending equipment out for professional servicing, winter is the best time to get ahead of the curve.

2. Clean and Calibrate Equipment - Sprayers

A clean sprayer is a reliable sprayer. Over time, residues from fertilizers, pesticides, and growth regulators can build up in tanks, lines, and nozzles, leading to inconsistent applications and potential damage. Thoroughly rinsing and cleaning sprayer tanks helps extend the life of your equipment and ensures that future applications perform as intended.

Once cleaned, take the time to calibrate your sprayers. Calibration is essential for ensuring accurate and uniform product delivery, which saves both money and materials. Reconfirm your nozzle flow rates, check pressure settings, and verify that your output matches target application rates. These adjustments will pay off in both precision and performance when the growing season returns.

3. Calibrate and Service Equipment - Spreaders

Similar to sprayers, spreaders require regular calibration to maintain accurate and even product distribution. Check for worn or corroded parts, lubricate moving mechanisms, and verify calibration settings against your most commonly used granular fertilizers or soil amendments. Proper calibration ensures that your turf receives consistent nutrient coverage—reducing waste and preventing application errors that can lead to uneven growth or burn.

4. Deep Clean Equipment and Organize the Shop

A clean, organized shop can make all the difference when the spring rush begins. Take advantage of the off-season to deep clean work areas, restock supplies, and update inventory. Label storage shelves, properly store chemicals and fertilizers, and discard expired or empty containers according to local regulations. This is also a great time to evaluate safety gear and ensure that all personal protective equipment (PPE) is in good condition and easily accessible.

5. Plan and Prepare for Next Season

Finally, winter is a great time to review your equipment logs, evaluate product performance, and plan your fertility and pest management programs for the upcoming season. Use maintenance data from the previous year to identify recurring issues or inefficiencies, and consider training opportunities for your crew on equipment use and safety.

Setting the Stage for Success

When spring arrives, golf course operations ramp up quickly. By investing time now in equipment maintenance, calibration, and organization, your team can hit the ground running with confidence and efficiency. Taking a proactive approach during the winter months not only extends the lifespan of your equipment—it also ensures that your turf receives the precise care it deserves when it matters most.
