Time to Major in the Minors – Part 2

7/6/2016 - By Harrell's

Last month we discussed the importance of minors and how to best apply them to your crop.  In this month’s blog we will discuss some current research about the source of those minor elements.

In a recent research article, Dr. Travis Shaddox documented that some sources of minors are not readily available if soil applied.  Iron sulfate and iron glucoheptonate are tied up rather quickly in the soil and this could limit the effectiveness or at least efficiency of the uptake by the plant.  Even though glucoheptonate is a chelating agent it did not work in this instance.

In lasts month's blog I discussed the concern over particle distribution of minors which could affect the efficiency of that application.  The attached study by Dr. Shaddox should reinforce the case that minor elements should be foliar applied.

A foliar application eliminates the soil dynamics and puts the minor element in a position to be efficiently and effectively assimilated into the plant.

Time to Major in the Minors – Part 2
