Persistently dry weather especially with high ET rates, creates real challenges for Golf Course Superintendents doing their best to maintain quality, healthy turf.

Drought and high ET rates suck the moisture out of the turf plant and cause root die-back at the same time.  This puts the plant at risk, as it struggles to stay alive with low mowing heights.  At the same time, salts build up causing further risk to the turf and health of the soil environment.

The key is to retain enough moisture to keep the turf healthy without creating wet conditions.   You need to choose the right product and apply it in the right way.  At Harrell’s, we don’t believe that “one wetting agent size fits all,” so we created two different HydrOtecH products:  Symphony, a great retaining agent; and Fleet, a great distributing agent.

To combat drought and high ET rates, apply Symphony in one of two ways—both at lower rates, more often than once a month.  Greater frequency gives you greater consistency without “overdoing” it.

1. 1-2 oz/1,000 sf once a week.  This can be tank-mixed with foliars, BioMAX 4-0-0  (@1 oz/1,000 sf),  PGRs, and/or fungicides.  Irrigate at night as you usually would.
2. 2.5-3 oz/1,000 sf every two weeks.  This can be tank-mixed with fungicides, BioMAX 4-0-0 (@2 oz/1,000 sf), EarthMAX (@2 oz/1,000 sf), and other soil products.  If dew is not present at time of application, spin the heads to wash the products applied off the leaf tissue.  Irrigate at night as you usually would.

To combat salt build-up—FLUSH!  Apply Fleet (@5-6 oz/1,000 sf) with Salt Rx (@3 oz/1,000 sf) and EarthMAX (@ 4 oz/1,000 sf) once a month.  Irrigate heavily after play, to the point of puddling.  Let the water soak in, and cycle again.

One more strategy that will help—instead of irrigating greens last at night, irrigate them first.  At the end of the day is when the turf needs the water the most, especially now with longer daylight hours.

El Correcto Agente Humectante para Condiciones Extremas de Sequía.

Temporadas de sequias persistentemente especialmente con alta proporciones de ET, crean retos verdaderos para los gerentes de Campos de Golf que hacen lo mejor para mantener césped de calidad y saludable.

Sequía y proporciones de ET chupan la humedad de la planta de césped y causa que la raíces se mueran al mismo tiempo.  Esto pone la planta en riesgo, mientras luchar por vivir con alturas del cortacésped.  Al mismo tiempo, acumulación de sal causa más riesgo al césped y la salud del ambiente terrenal.

La clave es retener suficiente humedad para mantener la césped saludable sin crear condiciones mojada.  Tiene que  escoger el producto correcto y aplicarlo en la forma correcta.  En Harrell’s, nosotros no creemos que “un agente humectante sirve para todos” así que hemos creado dos productos HydrOtech diferente.  Symphony, un gran agente retenedor; y Fleet un gran agente distribuidor.

Para combatir la sequía y proporciones altas de ET, aplique Symphony una de las dos formas – las dos son bajas proporciones, más que una vez al mes.  Mayor frecuencia le da mayor consistencia sin “exagerarse”.

1. 1-2 oz/1,000 pc una vez a la semana.  Esto puede ser una mezcla de tanque con follaje,  BioMAX 4-0-0  (@1 oz/1,000 pc),  PGRs, y/o fungicida. Riegue de noche como usualmente haria.
2. 2.5-3 oz/1,000 pc cada dos semanas.  Esto puede ser una mezcla de tanque con fungicida BioMAX 4-0-0 (@2 oz/1,000 pc), EarthMAX (@2 oz/1,000 pc), y otros productos de terreno.  Si roció no está presente al tiempo de la aplicación, de le vuelta al cabezal para lavar el producto aplicado de los tejidos de la hoja.  Riegue de noche como lo hace usualmente.

Para combatir la acumulación de sal – !ENJUAGE!  Aplique Fleet (@5-6 oz/1,000 pc) con Sal Rx (@3 oz/1,000 pc) y EarthMAX (@ 4 oz/1,000 pc) una vez al mes.  Irrigue fuertemente después de juegos, hasta el punto de pudding,  Deje que el agua empape y cicle nuevamente.

Una estrategia más que ayudara – en vez de irrigar la césped al final en la noche, irríguelas primero.  Al final del día es cuando el césped necesita más  agua, especialmente ahora con más horas en el día.
