As I write this, we are seeing tornado outbreaks, areas along with extreme flooding, and even accumulations of snow up to 14 inches! June is just around the corner and the crazy cold and wet spring just keeps hanging on.

But, to paraphrase the beloved Game of Thrones character Jon Snow, Summer is Coming! Some areas of the country are already seeing temperatures in the 90s, while others are just waiting for some consistency. Your turf may not be impressed with these conditions just like most of America was not impressed with the highly anticipated series finale of GOT. But just wait my friend, those long dog days of summer are just around the corner and here are a few things that you can do to prepare for them. 

Depending on your spring fertilizer source, the excess rain could have leached a lot of the nutrients out of the soil or the nitrogen may have already been used up by the plant due to a faster than normal release. This is where you would want to consider a proven controlled release fertilizer like POLYON®. Applications of POLYON® this time of the year can provide a consistent release of nitrogen throughout the summer months and lead you right into your fall fertilizer applications. The excess rains will also put pre-emergent herbicides through the ringer, providing them with a real test to help keep your turf weed free. Certain post-emergent herbicides will be needed to aid in this battle in the coming weeks once the temperatures warm up. Sedges are the first thing to come to my mind with excess moisture and there are many good options available for this weed. Check with you local Harrell’s rep right now to develop a strategy to prevent the same issues with sedge and crabgrass we saw last year. 

Harrell’s also has different wetting agents that can be extremely helpful depending on your situation. If you have greens that are holding excess moisture with all this rainfall, you would want to consider using Fleet® to help move that water into the rootzone and increase deep moisture penetration and distribution. Once the temperatures increase, Hydro-90 is a great tool for fairway applications. It contains 100% active ingredients and can aid in improving overall soil hydration and reducing water soil repellency. In Texas we have seen great results with this product applied on a monthly basis during the summertime at 1 gallon/acre. It is a great tank mix option on fairways when applying a growth regulator and an iron source like IronMn Mg. This mix does not need to be watered in immediately but does need to be irrigated that evening.
