There aren’t many people in our happy little industry I admire more than Steve Cook. Not only did he lead one of the world’s great turf teams at Oakland Hills through four major championships over 20 years, he’s also been an inspirational leader to many through his work with the Wee One Foundation and his efforts to raise funds for good causes by attempting to climb a mountain in the Himalayas. Mostly he’s a straight shooter and good human being. That’s why I jumped at the chance to interview him a few days after the BMW Championship trophy was presented to Justin Thomas on the 18th green at Medinah’s famed Course 3. 

Was coming back to Medinah more challenging than you thought it would be?

I would have to say that my ego probably got in the way a little. Even though I had worked here before and was very familiar with the operation and the club, I thought that the systems and programs I had in place at Oakland Hills would translate pretty easily to here, only on a larger scale. And that was probably a bit naïve on my part. What I thought would work didn’t translate all that well. My ego got put in check a little bit by the whole thing.

Medinah is so big that there’s just no way to look at the entire property on an everyday basis. At Oakland Hills I could do that because we only had 270 acres but here there’s 650 acres. The scope of the whole property and everything that occurs here…the scale is just so much bigger. I have to be a lot more reliant on the people that work for me to be out on the course and I can’t maybe spend as much time with them as I’d like.

How do you overcome that?

We have to have more scheduled meetings. At Oakland I’d pretty much see everybody all day around the facility. Now I have to be a better communicator at our staff meetings and throughout the day. 

Was coming back to Medinah just the right opportunity or a now-or-never thing? 

Both. Every time Medinah came open over the last 20 years I thought about it because I’m from Illinois, I started here, I have friends here, I went to college at the University of Illinois…but the timing was never right. This time I had been at Oakland for 20 years, and they were a great employer, but if I was going to make a change it was the time. There was no waiting for tomorrow. Tomorrow was kind of upon me. I also enjoyed doing tournaments so hosting the BMW was attractive to me and being closer to my parents, who are getting older, was attractive to me. So there were just a lot of boxes that got checked. And change is good.

I hear that! What was the overriding lesson you learned from this event?

Well, you can’t control the weather, which is not a new lesson for me. Every tournament is different, the setup is different, the weather is different and there’s always a new opportunity to learn about agronomics and about staff. That may have been the biggest thing because, with turnover, there’s always new staff so you get to see how they respond to the pressure and the stress. It’s a learning opportunity and it brings people together. It creates a tighter-knit group, usually. The bonds get stronger.

That’s got to be important to you because you’re still the new guy.

Yeah no question. I have to prove myself all over again because at Oakland I’d done four large events – a Ryder Cup, two U.S. Amateurs and a PGA Championship – so I really didn’t have much to prove. I had done it. But here it’s all new. The members had never seen me do a tournament before. The staff had never seen me do it. It felt like there was a lot at stake professionally for me at this point in my career. I wanted to get it right.

We’re you pleased? Did you feel good about it?

Yes. For sure. The plan we laid out is exactly what we executed and we got the results exactly as expected from that plan. We obviously would have preferred the golf course to be firmer but that was out of our control. But everything that was within our control, I was very pleased with. The agronomic program we put in place going back to last year worked well. We’re properly staffed and properly trained and the golf course showed great on TV. It made the members look good and the PGA Tour look good. That was our goal and we did it.

When I was there a few months ago I listened to you talk over your POLYON® controlled-release fertilizer program with your Harrell’s rep, Jason Funderberg. You were still a little nervous about it then. How do you feel about it now?

It was off the charts good. I knew how it reacted at Oakland Hills, but I didn’t know how it would react in this soil and this climate (in Chicago). But I had confidence in the product having seen it work for many years. 

It was just off the charts good. We just hit a homerun with that with the timing of it, when we put it down, the product we chose, the objective we were after…basically we were wall-to-wall POLYON® fertilizer through most of the golf course and it was perfect.

What were your timing considerations on the POLYON® fertilizer app?

I wanted it to peak right before or during the tournament so we didn’t have a huge flush of growth. Weather actually played in our favor because the application went down a couple of weeks later than originally scheduled and that worked out just fine.

Did you really have people texting you during the event about how good it looked?

A lot of people reached out and told me how great it looked on TV. It was really gratifying. It looked just as good in person as it did on TV too. You’d be hard pressed to find better turf than that. Somebody would have to show me where there’s better turf than in Course 3’s fairways and roughs inside the ropes during that event.

How was your POLYON® fertilizer program at Medinah different than what you’d done in the past?

Pretty much identical. The philosophy inside and outside the ropes was the same. The timing was the same. The amount of nitrogen we put down was a little bit higher here on Course 3 than I used in Michigan but we saw no adverse effects.

It accomplished that I wanted. I couldn’t have been happier and I see no reason to change.

How did you and Jason work together?

Well I told him what the objectives were. We wanted to peak the week prior to the tournament as best we could and showed him the areas where we were trying to bring up the fertility in the roughs inside and outside the ropes. He came up with that recommendation and that worked great.

Final thoughts?

All of our vendor partners, Harrell’s included, were great partners. We couldn’t have done it without them. It just doesn’t happen without that support. Harrell’s was a key partner. I couldn’t have been happier with both that support and the product. POLYON® fertilizer is simply outstanding. Every time I use it I’m happy that I did.

No hay muchas personas en nuestra pequeña industria feliz que admire más que Steve Cook. ¿Volver a Medinah fue más desafiante de lo que pensabas?

Debo decir que mi ego probablemente se interpuso un poco. Aunque ya había trabajado aquí antes y estaba muy familiarizado con la operación y el club, pensé que los sistemas y programas que tenía en Oakland Hills se traducirían con bastante facilidad aquí, solo a mayor escala. También disfruté haciendo torneos, por lo que organizar el BMW fue atractivo para mí y estar más cerca de mis padres, que están envejeciendo, fue atractivo para mí. Bueno, no puedes controlar el clima, lo cual no es una nueva lección para mí. Cada torneo es diferente, la configuración es diferente, el clima es diferente y siempre hay una nueva oportunidad para aprender sobre agronomía y sobre el personal. Eso puede haber sido lo más importante porque, con la rotación, siempre hay personal nuevo para que pueda ver cómo responden a la presión y el estrés. Es una oportunidad de aprendizaje y une a las personas. Crea un grupo más unido, por lo general. Los lazos se fortalecen.

Eso tiene que ser importante para ti porque sigues siendo el chico nuevo.

Sí, no hay duda. Tengo que demostrarme una vez más porque en Oakland había realizado cuatro grandes eventos: una Copa Ryder, dos Amateurs de EE. UU. Y un Campeonato PGA, así que realmente no tenía mucho que demostrar. Lo hice, pero aquí todo es nuevo. Los miembros nunca me habían visto hacer un torneo antes. El personal nunca me había visto hacerlo. Sentí que había mucho en juego profesionalmente para mí en este momento de mi carrera. Quería hacerlo bien.

¿Estas contento? ¿Te sentiste bien al respecto?

Sí. Sin lugar a duda. El plan que presentamos es exactamente lo que ejecutamos y obtuvimos los resultados exactamente como se esperaban de ese plan. Obviamente hubiéramos preferido que el campo de golf fuera más firme, pero eso estuviera fuera de nuestro control. Pero estaba muy satisfecho con todo lo que estaba bajo nuestro control. El programa agronómico que implementamos desde el año pasado funcionó bien. Contamos con el personal y la capacitación adecuados y el campo de golf se mostró excelente en la televisión. Hizo que los miembros se vean bien y que el PGA Tour se vea bien. Ese era nuestro objetivo y lo logramos.

Cuando estuve allí hace unos meses, lo escuché hablar sobre su programa de POLYON® controlled-release fertilizer POLYON® con Harrell’s rep, Jason Funderberg.. Todavía estabas un poco nervioso por eso. ¿Cómo se siente al respecto ahora?

Estaba fuera de las listas bueno. Sabía cómo reaccionó en Oakland Hills, pero no sabía cómo reaccionaría en este suelo y este clima (en Chicago). Pero tenía confianza en que el producto lo había visto funcionar durante muchos años.

Quería que alcanzara su punto máximo justo antes o durante el torneo, por lo que no tuvimos un gran crecimiento. El clima en realidad jugó a nuestro favor porque la aplicación dejó de funcionar un par de semanas después de lo programado originalmente y funcionó bien.

¿Realmente tuvo gente enviándole mensajes de texto durante el evento sobre lo bien que se veía?

Mucha gente se acercó y me dijo lo bien que se veía en la televisión. Fue realmente gratificante. Se veía tan bien en persona como en la televisión también. Sería difícil encontrar un mejor césped que ese. Alguien tendría que mostrarme dónde hay mejor césped que en los canalizo y rugosidades del Campo 3 dentro de las cuerdas durante ese evento.

¿En qué se diferenciaba su programa de POLYON® fertilizer en Medinah de lo que había hecho en el pasado?

Bastante idéntico. La filosofía dentro y fuera de las cuerdas era la misma. El momento fue el mismo. La cantidad de nitrógeno que pusimos fue un poco más alta aquí en el Curso 3 que la que usé en Michigan, pero no vimos efectos adversos. Logré lo que quería. No podría haber sido más feliz y no veo ninguna razón para cambiar.

¿Cómo trabajaron  juntos usted y Jason? 

Bueno, le dije cuáles eran los objetivos. Queríamos alcanzar el pico la semana anterior al torneo lo mejor que pudimos y le mostramos las áreas en las que estábamos tratando de aumentar la fertilidad en los momentos difíciles dentro y fuera de las cuerdas. Se le ocurrió esa recomendación y funcionó muy bien.

¿Pensamiento Final?

Todos nuestros socios proveedores, incluido Harrell’s, fueron excelentes socios. No podríamos haberlo hecho sin ellos. Simplemente no sucede sin ese apoyo. Harrell’s fue un socio clave.
