I believe most of you would agree that the weather that we have experienced this fall and winter has been anything but normal. Golf course superintendents were mowing greens in the northeast in December. What’s wrong with this picture? Many superintendents would think that was not a big deal as they realized more money in the cash register because of the unseasonably warm weather.

The money part is true, and I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade but there are some things that you may want to consider and be on the lookout for this coming spring as a result of these weather patterns.

I don’t think old man winter is quite finished with us yet and we are in for some more cold weather across the country. The weather patterns have been cyclic with cold to warm, to cold to warm, etc. This cycle affects turfgrass plants like an off and on switch. When it warms up, the plants think “okay time to grow”. When it turns cold, they think it is time to shut down. This start and stop growth habit can cause some potential problems in the spring when it is actually time for the turfgrass plants to grow. 

The concern with this type of growth pattern for turfgrass in the winter is that every time the turfgrass plants turn on to try and grow they are using some of the stored carbohydrates that are normally used in the spring. If a great job was done with late season fertility for building carbohydrates, then you may be okay come spring when it is time to burn these stored energy reserves to recover from winter dormancy. On the other hand, if a poor job or even no job was done that focused specifically on this carbohydrate production time, there is a good chance that some turfgrass may not have enough energy to fight the battle to overcome dormancy and become established this spring. I hope I am totally off base with my logic and not one single golf course in the country loses any turfgrass, but if I was a betting man I would say there will be some turfgrass that doesn’t make it. 

If you find yourself in that boat and notice that the turfgrass is struggling in the spring with erratic green-up, you may want to provide some supplemental feeding to try and assist. The plants are not going to be at a point from a physiological perspective to efficiently utilize granular fertilizers at this application timing. Therefore, you may consider foliar feeding with liquid fertilizers and/or biostimulants to help these plants along during this time of stress. Of course, these foliar applications are not going to replace the empty carbohydrate reserves, but rather provide some uptake of the applied fertilizers via the plant foliage to aid in its growth and establishment. 

Good luck and I hope my prediction is wrong, but it never hurts to be on the lookout on the front end rather than ask questions after the fact.

El Lanzamiento de la Primavera – Este Alerta

Yo creo que la mayoría de ustedes estarían de acuerdo que el tiempo que estamos experimentando este otoño y invierno ha sido todo menos normal. Gerentes de campos de golf estaba cortando césped en el noroeste en diciembre. ¿Que anda mal en esta foto? Muchos gerentes pensarían que no esto no es gran cosa al ellos realizar más dinero en efectivo en la caja registradora por causa de la época caliente. La parte del dinero es verdad, y no quiero aguar la parada de nadie pero hay algunas cosas que quera considerar y esté al tanto de esta próxima primavera como resultado de este patrón del tiempo.

Yo no pienso que Viejo hombre invierno ha terminado todavía, y estamos por confrontar más tiempo frio a través del país. Los patrones del tiempos han sido cíclico con frio al caliente a frio a caliente, etc. Este cíclico afecta plantas césped como un encender o apagar. Cuando se pone caliente, las plantas piensan “tiempo de crecer”. Cuando se pone frio, ellas piensan “tiempo de cerrar”. Este
habito de crecimiento de comenzar y parar puede causar algunos problemas potenciales en la primavera cuando es en actualidad tiempo para que las plantas de césped crezcan.

Lo que concierne con este tipo de patrón de crecimiento en el invierno es que cada vez que la planta de césped trata de crecer están usando algunos de los carbohidratos almacenados que normalmente son usados en la primavera. Si un buen trabajo fue hecho con la época de fertilidad para construir carbohidratos, ( late season fertility for building carbohydrates) entonces puede que esté bien cuando llegue la primavera cuando sea tiempo para quemar estas reservas de energías almacenadas para recuperar de la inactividad del invierno.

En cambio, si un pobre trabajo o ningún trabajo fue hecho que se enfoque específicamente en este tiempo de producción de carbohidrato, hay una buena probabilidad que alguno del césped no tenga suficiente energía para combatir y superar la inactividad y se establezca en la primavera. Yo espero estar fuera de base en mi lógica y que ni un solo campo de golf en este país pierda nada de sus césped, pero si fuero un hombre de aventura yo diría que habrán algunas césped que no se lograran. Si se encuentra en esa situación y nota que el césped está luchando esta primavera con crecimiento errático, quera provee algún alimento suplemento para asistir. Las plantas van a estar en un desde el punto de fisiológico para efectivamente utilizar fertilizantes granular este tiempo de aplicación. Así que, debe considerar la alimentación de follaje con fertilizante líquido (liquid fertilizers) y/o biostimulants para ayudar las plantas durante el tiempo de estrés. Por supuesto, estas aplicaciones de follaje no van a reemplazar las reservas vacías de carbohidrato, al contrario proveerán algo del fertilizante aplicado vía el follaje planta para ayudarle en el crecimiento y establecerle.

Buena suerte y espero que mi predicción este errónea, pero nunca esta demás estar al tanto al frente en vez que sea muy tarde.
