When someone suggested that I apply to the inaugural Bayer Women in Golf event, I admittedly hesitated. I wasn’t really sure what they were looking for and the essay questions in the application were pretty heavy:

“What does Diversity and Inclusion mean to you? Why is it important in the golf industry?”   

Oh wow…what was I possibly going to say that makes me stand out from the crowd and, more importantly, what do I have to add to a group event such as this?  

Thankfully, I was one of the 50 women chosen to attend and now, sitting here now writing this, I am very grateful for the opportunity they gave all of us.

It was a well-organized, high energy event, offering talks on professional development such as resume-building and finding your next opportunity, along with personal development including personality types, mental and emotional health and overall well-being.  We were able to tour the Bayer Clayton Research Facility near Raleigh the first day and check out the plots and hear about the testing and research that is done there. The second day was spent at the Bayer HQ in Research Triangle Park - a new, ultra-modern, fun office space that would inspire anyone who works there. 

The best part was meeting all the other women that were invited. In the weeks leading up to the event, most of us found each other on social media and started to make connections. Finally, we were all in the same room, and instantly it felt like we already knew each other.  

I have never met a more grounded, intelligent, hard-working, honest group of ladies in my life. Curiously, I never felt like we were together to tackle giant issues of inclusion or focus on the fact that we were women. Instead, it felt like we just belonged there in that moment learning about each other and finding common ground.  

I don’t think anyone in the room needed the event to feel worthy of the positions they hold or to make statements. Instead, we needed this event to have a place where we could openly share thoughts and ideas and stories and not feel vulnerable for thinking or feeling certain ways. There was no judging – we were all equal. Mostly, it was enjoyable to share stories (often off-topic) and laugh about the daily work-life balance with spouses, kids, and family schedules.  

Since our return a few weeks ago, we have stayed in touch with each other through social media. There are ongoing chats about the everyday issues on the course as well as simple words of motivation to get each other through your day. Each one of us seemed to have a renewed sense of energy and drive when we returned to our respective homes.  As I said, none of us were searching for any special recognition, but it is nice to be noticed sometimes.

I think I can speak on behalf of all the women who attended and say I truly hope Bayer continues this and that the concept will continue to grow. There are plenty other women out there who deserve the opportunity to experience an event like this and it’s one more thing that might welcome more women into our profession.

Don’t let any of them think that they aren’t what Bayer is looking for. They are exactly who Bayer is looking for.   

My final thought? I love what I do, I love the golf industry, and I have always felt included. But this time, it did feel good to finally not be the only girl in the room.

Cuando alguien sugirió que me postulara para el evento inaugural de Mujer de Golf de Bayer, ciertamente lo dudé. No estaba realmente seguro de lo que estaban buscando y las preguntas de ensayo en la solicitud eran bastante pesadas:

“¿Qué significa para usted Diversidad e Inclusión? ¿Por qué es importante en la industria del golf? 

Oh, wow ... ¿qué iba a decir que me hiciera destacar entre la multitud y, lo que es más importante, ¿qué debo agregar a un evento grupal como este?

Afortunadamente, fui una de las 50 mujeres elegidas para asistir y ahora, sentada aquí ahora escribiendo esto, estoy muy agradecida por la oportunidad que nos dieron a todas.

Fue un evento bien organizado y de alta energía, que ofreció charlas sobre desarrollo profesional, como la creación de currículums y la búsqueda de su próxima oportunidad, junto con el desarrollo personal, incluidos los tipos de personalidad, la salud mental y emocional y el bienestar general. Pudimos recorrer el Centro de Investigación Bayer Clayton cerca de Raleigh el primer día y revisar las parcelas y escuchar las pruebas e investigaciones que se realizan allí. El segundo día lo pasó en la oficina de estudios de Bayer en Research Triangle Park, un espacio de oficina nuevo, ultramoderno y divertido que inspiraría a cualquiera que trabaje allí.

La mejor parte fue conocer a todas las otras mujeres que fueron invitadas. En las semanas previas al evento, la mayoría de nosotros nos encontramos en las redes sociales y comenzamos a hacer conexiones. Finalmente, estábamos todos en la misma habitación, e instantáneamente parecía que ya nos conocíamos.

Nunca he conocido un grupo de mujeres más fundadas, inteligente, trabajador y honestas en mi vida. Curiosamente, nunca sentí que estábamos juntas para abordar cuestiones gigantes de inclusión o centrarnos en el hecho de que éramos mujeres. En cambio, parecía que solo pertenecíamos allí en ese momento aprendiendo el uno del otro y encontrando un terreno común.

No creo que nadie en la sala necesitara el evento para sentirse digno de las posiciones que tienen o para hacer declaraciones. En cambio, necesitábamos este evento para tener un lugar donde pudiéramos compartir abiertamente pensamientos e ideas e historias y no sentirnos vulnerables por pensar o sentir de cierta manera. No hubo juicio, todos éramos iguales. Sobre todo, fue agradable compartir historias (a menudo fuera de tema) y reírse del equilibrio diario entre la vida laboral y familiar con los cónyuges, los hijos y los horarios familiares.

Desde nuestro regreso hace unas semanas, nos hemos mantenido en contacto entre nosotros a través de las redes sociales. Hay charlas continuas sobre los problemas cotidianos en el curso, así como simples palabras de motivación para pasar el día. Cada uno de nosotros parecía tener una renovada sensación de energía e impulso cuando regresábamos a nuestros respectivos hogares. Como dije, ninguno de nosotros buscaba ningún reconocimiento especial, pero a veces es agradable ser notado.

Creo que puedo hablar en nombre de todas las mujeres que asistieron y decir que realmente espero que Bayer continúe así y que el concepto continúe creciendo. Hay muchas otras mujeres por ahí que merecen la oportunidad de experimentar un evento como este y es una cosa más que podría dar la bienvenida a más mujeres en nuestra profesión.
