Nematodes have always been an issue, but are becoming more of an issue due to the limited control options that are available for use in turfgrasses.  I know that many of you are thinking "why in the world are you talking about nematodes now and we still have dormant turfgrass?". 

Nematodes can be active throughout the winter, especially in climates where the turfgrass is not completely dormant and/or cool-season turfgrasses are present as a food source for the nematodes.  As a matter of fact, research has shown that overseeded bermudagrass has shown an increase in nematode populations through the winter. 

Control options are becoming very limited for nematodes.  Some of you still have some inventory of Nemacur.  Just a reminder, all of the Nemacur will need to be utilized before October, 2014.  While Nemacur is going to be one of your best options for “knockdown” of nematode populations if severe infestations and damage are noted, it will not be available for use after October, 2014. 

The only other option for a severe nematode problem would be Curfew.  Other products are available, but they do not seem to have the knockdown of nematode populations that Nemacur or Curfew would provide. 

Avid from Syngenta has been registered for use for nematode control.  Avid has shown pretty good efficacy on nematodes, but requires more of a “maintenance” program with monthly applications.  In addition, Avid will be tied up in the thatch if heavy organic matter is present.  It is recommended to apply a penetrant wetting agent the week prior to application of Avid for nematode control to help move the Avid down the soil profile and through the thatch. 

Multiguard is another product that has been registered for nematode control.  Multiguard is a fairly water soluble nematicide and has shown to potentially cause some turfgrass phytotoxicity.  At the same time, no turfgrass injury may be noted but this inconsistency is also noted in nematode control. 

There are some other products that are sold and claim nematode control; however, I have not seen consistent control that would justify the use of these products.

Nematodo siempre ha sido un problema, pero se convierten aún más en problema dado al límite de opciones de control que están disponible para el uso de césped.  Yo sé que muchos de usted están pensando “porque razón está hablando de nematodo ahora cuando todavía la césped está inactivo?”

Nematodos puede estar activo a través del invierno, especialmente en clima donde el césped no esta completamente inactiva y/o césped de temporada fría están presente como una fuente de alimento para los nematodos.  De hecho, los estudios muestran que el resembrado césped bermuda ha mostrado un aumento en la populación de nematodo durante el invierno.

Opciones de control está siendo muy limitada para nematodos.  Algunos de usted todavía tienen inventario de Nemacur.  Solo un recordatorio, todo el Nemacur tendrá que ser utilizado antes de Octubre, 2014.  Mientras Nemacur va a ser una de sus mejores opciones para “tumbadores” de la populación de nematodo si una infestación severa y danos son notados, no estará disponible para el uso después de octubre, 2014.

La única otra opción para un problema severo de nematodo seria Curfew.  Otros productos están disponible, pero no tiende a tener “el tumbador” de la populación el cual Nemacur o Curfew pude proveer.

Avid de syngenta ha sido registrado para uso del control de nematodo.  Avid ha sido mostrado muy bueno eficacia en nematodos, pero requiere más de programa de mantenimiento con aplicación mensual.  Además, Avido será atado en la paja si pesado materia orgánica está presente.  Es recomendado aplicar un agente mojado penetrante la semana antes de la aplicación de Avid para control de nematodo para ayudar a mover el Avid bajo el perfil de la tierra y a través de la paja.

MultiGuard es otro producto que ha sido registrado para el control de nematodo.  MultiGuard es un soluble nematicide de agua regular y ha probado ser potencialmente la causa de algunos céspedes citotoxicidad.  Al mismo tiempo, ningún daño de césped será notado pero esta inconsistencia es también notada en el control de nematodo.

Hay otros productos que son vendidos y reclaman controlar nematodo; sin embargo, no he visto consistencia en control que justifique el uso de estos productos.
