Jose grew up in San Jose, Costa Rica, constantly surrounded by the intense biodiversity of expansive rainforests, cloud forests, and dry forests. Needless to say, from birth Jose was thrust into the world of Horticulture, and he was attached almost instantly! His interest led him to attend the Universidad de Costa Rica where he received his degree, and eventually led him to his first big horticultural position at Hampshire Farms in Illinois. “It instantly clicked for me; I knew I was going to be doing this for the rest of my life.” said Jose about his first position.

To date, Jose has been in the industry for nearly 14 years, perfecting his craft and gaining any and all experience he can come across within or related to the field. He has been with Harrell’s for almost six months now and is very excited to continue growing and learning with Harrell’s. Jose consistently praises the Harrell’s team for their welcoming presence, overwhelming support, and drive for everyone in around or connected to the team to be successful in everything they do. “It’s really exciting, EVERYBODY has truly welcomed me with open arms, and they all want me to be successful.”

Jose’s favorite part about working in the Horticulture industry is the big numbers. He loves being able to tend to and manage huge numbers of plants everyday and see them through every step of their cycle, from clay pot to customer. Because when it comes down to it, it’s all about the customer and how they receive the end product. “The same way that everyone has helped me here and make me feel good, I want to help those customers achieve their goals. Growing thousands of plants.”

When Jose isn’t working, he enjoys spending his time out in nature, especially hitting the trails on his mountain bike and taking in the flowering plants of the area, which are his favorite when it comes to Horticulture.

Jose is an invaluable member of the Harrell’s family, always looking to improve his expertise, service his customers and coworkers, and show what it looks like to love what you do on the daily. We are so grateful to have Jose on the team and are looking forward to seeing his journey with Harrell’s continue to grow!
