Do What You Love and You Never Have to Go to Work

After twenty plus years with Harrell’s, I approach my retirement date at the end of this year.  Reflecting on those years, I feel proud and lucky to have been a part of this growing company and glad to have worked with and contributed to the success of many customers and fellow employees.

I have enjoyed working with all departments within Harrell’s but especially with the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Sales Teams.

I started my career back in 1972, accepting a job as a vegetable gardener for David and Peggy Rockefeller in Pocantico Hills, New York.  The gentlemen who interviewed me offered me the position on the spot, but I informed him that I knew little about vegetable gardening.  He stated that he knew everything I needed to know and I would be working for him so he would teach me. It just so happened that he knew less than me!  Fortunately, the Rockefeller’s took a liking to me and I ended up as the manager of their farm during the sixteen years I worked for them.

In 1989 I began working within the Golf Industry. Working with people who loved the outdoors and mother nature brought me satisfaction in my job.

During my forty-seven years I’ve found two clichés to be true: 1. As much as things change, they remain the same. 2. Do what you love and you never have to go to work.

Working at Harrell’s allowed me to see many things, some good, some bad and some humorous.  I’ve always enjoyed the funny side. I can’t really remember which year, 2002 or 2005, while attending the Golf Industry Show in Orlando, Florida as a sales representative, I invited ten of my friends/customers out to dinner at Charley’s Steak House. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we ran into the Purcell Farms group and as chance would have it our table was right next to their table.  As the maître d was seating us, I was excited about the great evening we were going to have.

Once we were all seated the maître d asked if we would like some wine from the bottles placed on the table.  Being excited, without thinking, I said, yes, we are here to have a good time, please open the red.  At that moment, Tom Leahy, the Golf Course Superintendent at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, hit my arm and said “Joe, that is a 1992 BV Grand Reserve, are you sure you want to do that?”  We have all heard stories where events go into slow motion, that is exactly what happened at this moment. As I turned my head towards the maître d, he was in the process of removing the cork and as we made eye contact there was a POP of the cork exiting the bottle.  He asked me if I needed anything.  I simply just looked away. He fills all the glasses and finally gets to me and I ask him if he would tell me the cost.  He bends down and whispers in my ear, “Sir, that bottle is $1,000.00.”

I was later told that all the color left my face and promptly excused myself to the men’s room to try and comprehend what I had just done. After spending time trying to figure what I was going to do, I took a deep breath, splashed my face with cold water and returned to the table. Upon arriving back at the table, there was a pile of cash at my place! Everyone had contributed to ease my pain! I witnessed true friendship!

It didn’t end there!  The next day walking the show floor, I could feel everyone’s eyes on me whispering “that’s the guy who spent $1,000 on a bottle of wine.”  I received phone calls from customers informing me that I would be ordering the wine next time we went out.  I even received a call from Harrell’s that I would be paying for that bottle!  There are just no secrets in the industry!

With all the notoriety I received, turns out to be the best $1,000 I ever spent!

I am fortunate to have worked with great colleagues and have made many friends throughout the industry. Thank you all for a great career!

Siempre he disfrutado el lado divertido.

Me preguntó si necesitaba algo.
