The Houston area was slammed by tropical storm Imelda September 17-19. It was a disaster for much of the area but it was potentially devastating to the team at GC of Houston as they prepped for this year’s Houston Open.  

They received 20”+ of rain, most of which came on Thursday, September 19th. The course was flooded and inundated with debris. Brian Buckner, CGCS, and team had worked all growing season toward getting the golf course ready for the new fall dates for their big event and just a few weeks before go time, they were slammed by the storm.  

And, on top of the golf course getting trashed, Brian’s home was flooded with a foot of water. When I called Brian on Friday, September 20th to see if he needed help with his house, all he could think about was the golf course and getting ready for the tournament. And, even more remarkably, he said he didn’t need help with his house because he and neighbors had already torn out his flooring and started tearing out drywall and cabinets on Thursday night. So, thanks to the kindness of his neighbors, Friday morning he was already at the golf course assessing the flood damage and making a plan for how to get it in tournament shape in less than three weeks.

Over the weeks of repairs and fixes, I saw firsthand how incredibly dedicated Brian, his assistant Jason Ploetz and their staff are to their jobs. It is unbelievable the work that has been accomplished in such a short amount of time. I have toured the course with Brian each week since Imelda and the transformation that has been made is just astonishing.  

I was there yesterday (Thursday 10/10) and it’s like the storm never happened. These guys put their heads down, worked their tails off, and accomplished the impossible. All on top of their leader’s home being flooded and now in renovation. All I can say is these guys are rockstars and the golf course is money. Congratulations to the whole team!

El área de Houston fue azotada por la tormenta tropical Imelda del 17 al 19 de septiembre. Fue un desastre para gran parte del área, pero fue potencialmente devastador para el equipo de GC de Houston, ya que se prepararon para el Abierto de Houston de este año.

Recibieron más de 20 pulgadas de lluvia, la mayoría de las cuales llegaron el jueves 19 de septiembre. El curso fue inundado e inundado con escombros. Brian Buckner, CGCS y el equipo habían trabajado toda la temporada de crecimiento para preparar el campo de golf para las nuevas fechas de otoño para su gran evento y solo unas pocas semanas antes de la hora de salida, la tormenta los golpeó.

Entonces, gracias a la amabilidad de sus vecinos, el viernes por la mañana ya estaba en el campo de golf evaluando el daño de la inundación y haciendo un plan sobre cómo ponerlo en forma en un torneo en menos de tres semanas.

Estuve allí ayer (jueves 10/10) y es como si la tormenta nunca hubiera sucedido. Estos tipos bajaron la cabeza, se quitaron la cola y lograron lo imposible. Todo encima de la casa de su líder inundada y ahora en renovación. Todo lo que puedo decir es que estos tipos son estrellas de rock y el campo de golf es dinero. ¡Felicidades a todo el equipo!
