It was pretty much like a hundred other Northwest Ohio GCSA board meetings Tim Glorioso had chaired over his three terms on the board. The most interesting item on the April meeting agenda was to decide what to do with the proceeds from the chapter’s annual fundraising event at the Catawba Island Club. They decided to grant the money to the Wee One Foundation, the charity that comes to the aid of turfheads in need. 

Glorioso liked the idea a lot. “I thought it was an amazing…just a special thing,” he recalls. “Turf people helping turf people.” He gaveled the meeting to a close and went home to his family.

Flash forward a few months to early summer and Tim Glorioso is driving to work at Toledo Country Club on a route he’s traveled a thousand times over 18 years at the club. He stopped at a light and then realized something very scary; he couldn’t remember how to get to work.

“I called my wife and said, Lynette, I think I need to go to the doctor. I started driving home and got lost again. I had to GPS my way home.”

He was immediately admitted to the hospital and had an MRI scan. The initial diagnosis: likely brain tumor. “It’s not a word you ever want to hear. Lynette and I didn’t sleep much that night.” 

But the news got way better the next day. It wasn’t a tumor, it was a virus causing swelling in his brain. Doctors did a spinal tap and confirmed it was encephalitis. It was treatable. The joy and relief were overwhelming.

But the process was just beginning. He received IV antibiotics every 8 hours for weeks. “We were playing defense against the virus. My wife was basically my nurse and handled a lot of the treatments herself.” He was nauseous and tired from the treatments but slowly, surely got better.

He was getting healthier, but there was another nagging problem…Glorioso’s insurance had high out-of-pocket deductibles and there were piles of medical bills coming in. Fear about medical issues turned to anxiety about financial ones.  

One day he got a call to meet his friends and fellow chapter leaders Don Lawrence and Shawn Goltz for lunch. Glorioso was pleasantly surprised to find his wife also waiting at the restaurant. He was then utterly dumbfounded when he was handed a substantial check from the Wee One Foundation.

“That day we decided to support them I never dreamed that I would be one of the ones who needed help,” he says, his voice choking a little. “Thank God for the Wee One Foundation.” 

In addition to the Wee One grant he received, the chapter decided to rededicate the fundraiser to both the Wee One Foundation and the Glorioso family as a way to say thanks for all his contributions to the association. (“You miss one board meeting and your @#$%! friends vote to name the tournament after you,” he laughs.) Finally, he says, many Toledo CC members have stepped forward to help his family as well. 

“I really do feel blessed to be in this industry. I don’t think other professions care about each other this way.”

Mike Rupp, Glorioso’s longtime friend and Harrell’s rep, echoed that: “It was just awesome to see the industry support for Tim and the Wee One organization. I don’t know anyone who has given more of himself or more to the industry. He’s one of the true class acts in the turf world!”

Glorioso urged everyone to give back in whatever way they can. “I hope even more superintendents will support Wee One by writing a check, attending an event or donating through Harrell’s. You never know when you or a good friend are going to be the person they’re helping.”

Era casi como un centenar de otras reuniones de la junta de GCSA del noroeste de Ohio que Tim Glorioso había presidido durante sus tres períodos en la junta. El tema más interesante en la agenda de la reunión de abril fue decidir qué hacer con las ganancias del evento anual de recaudación de fondos del capítulo en el Catawba Island Club. Decidieron otorgar el dinero a la Fundación Wee One, la organización benéfica que ayuda a los de la industria de césped que tienen necesidad.

A Glorioso le gustó mucho la idea. "Pensé que era increíble ... solo algo especial", recuerda. "Gente de césped ayudando a gente de césped". Dio por terminada la reunión y se fue a casa con su familia.

Unos meses antes del comienzo del verano y Tim Glorioso conduce al trabajo en Toledo Country Club en una ruta que ha recorrido mil veces durante 18 años en el club. Se detuvo en un semáforo y luego se dio cuenta de algo muy aterrador; no podía recordar cómo llegar al trabajo.

“Yo llamé a mi esposa y le dije, Lynette, creo que necesito ir al doctor.  Comencé a manejar hacia la casa y me perdí otra vez. Tuve que usar el GPS a la casa.”

Fue ingresado de inmediato en el hospital y se le realizó una resonancia magnética MRI. El diagnóstico inicial: probable tumor cerebral. "No es una palabra que quieras escuchar. Lynette y yo no dormimos mucho esa noche ".

Pero la noticia mejoró mucho al día siguiente. No era un tumor, era un virus que causaba hinchazón en su cerebro. Los médicos le hicieron una punción lumbar y confirmaron que era encefalitis. Fue tratable. La alegría y el alivio fueron abrumadores.

Pero el proceso apenas comenzaba. Recibió antibióticos por vía intravenosa cada 8 horas durante semanas. “Estábamos jugando a la defensa contra el virus. Mi esposa era básicamente mi enfermera y manejó muchos de los tratamientos ella misma”. Tenía náuseas y estaba cansado de los tratamientos, pero lentamente, seguramente mejoró.

Se estaba volviendo más saludable, pero había otro problema persistente ... El seguro de Glorioso tenía altos deducibles de bolsillo y entraban montones de facturas médicas. El miedo a los problemas médicos se convirtió en ansiedad por los financieros.

Un día recibió una llamada para almorzar con sus amigos y compañeros líderes del capítulo Don Lawrence y Shawn Goltz. Glorioso se sorprendió gratamente al encontrar a su esposa también esperando en el restaurante. Luego quedó completamente estupefacto cuando le entregaron un cheque sustancial de la Fundación Wee One (Wee One Foundation.)

“Ese día nosotros decidimos apoyarle. yo nunca imagine que yo sería uno de los que necesitaría ayuda,” él dijo, casi llorando.  “Gracias a Dios por la Fundación Wee One.

Además de la subvención Wee One que recibió, el capítulo decidió volver a dedicar la recaudación de fondos tanto a la Fundación Wee One como a la familia Glorioso como una forma de agradecer todas sus contribuciones a la asociación. ("¡Te pierdes una reunión de la junta y tus amigos @ # $%! Votan para nombrar el torneo después de ti", se ríe). Finalmente, dice, muchos miembros de Toledo CC han dado un paso adelante para ayudar a su familia también.

 “Verdaderamente me siento bendecido estar en esta industria”.  No creo que otras profesiones se preocupen unas de otras de esta manera. 

Mike Rupp, el viejo amigo de Glorioso y representante de Harrell, se hizo eco de eso: "Fue increíble ver el apoyo de la industria para Tim y la organización Wee One". No conozco a nadie que haya dado más de sí mismo o más a la industria. ¡Es uno de los verdaderos actos de clase en el mundo del césped! "

Glorioso instó a todos a devolver lo que puedan. "Espero que incluso más superintendentes apoyen a Wee One escribiendo un cheque, asistiendo a un evento o donando a través de Harrell's. Nunca se sabe cuándo usted o un buen amigo serán la persona a la que están ayudando ".
