I recently attended the Indian River Citrus School presented by the University of Florida/IFAS.  Dr. Arnold Schumann presented a program about citrus fertilization and I thought it might be a good idea to share some of his presentation and expand on a few items.

During his presentation Dr. Schumann reminded us of the four “R’s” of nutrient stewardship for Best Management Practices.  Those “R’s” are:

1. Use the Right Source of Nutrient
2. Apply at the Right rate
3. Apply at the Right time
4. Apply to the Right place

So let’s expand a little on the Right way to do things. 

The Right source indicates there is a difference in how a fertilizer is made.  There are multiple sources for each macro, secondary and micro nutrient component within a blend of fertilizer.  There are quick release, slow release and controlled release options for many nutrients available in the market.  Make sure you know what’s in the bag and how it will release in order to improve your crop’s performance, yield and return.  Carefully consider the source of these materials since this will determine the availability as well as the performance in the crop.

The Right rate indicates there is a minimal as well as maximum amount which should be applied.  Too much fertilizer is a waste of money and too little fertilizer will also waste money since you will not get the performance or yield you need to maximize profits.  It can be tempting to cut the rate a little in order to lower your input cost but if you deprive the plant of needed nutrition you will not get the optimal performance which could cost you profits in the long term.

Resist the urge to be penny wise and dollar dumb.  This is especially true with controlled release products since they are designed to last much longer than traditional materials and it should make sense that if you feed for a longer period you will need more “food in the pantry”.  Many times I’ve seen growers skimp on the rate of an controlled release product then complain that it didn’t last long enough or lacked the level of performance they expected. 

The Right time could be watching the weather for a potential rainfall which could be detrimental for an application of all chemical quick release fertilizer but also timing for your particular crop.  Prior to bloom, at fruit set or post-harvest all need to be considered when you make your application.  Remember also to consider the level of harvest, if it was an especially heavy harvest you may need to up your rate to give the tree enough to recover and get it ready for next year.  You should consider your annual rate and the previous application such that you’re feeding enough over the entire year not just one application.

The Right place means to be sure your application equipment or process is accurately adjusted to apply the material to the designated area.  If you’re correctly calibrated (Right rate) but your application equipment is not adjusted to apply to the correct area, all is for naught!  Make sure your spreader is operating correctly and is hitting the target root zone for your crop; if not you’re wasting money and time.

I believe all professional managers know the information provided above but I find it helps to be reminded of the basics.  Even the best football players practice on the fundamentals!

Haciendo Cosas en Forma Correcta

Yo recientemente asistí la presentación por la Escuela Indian River Citrus de la Universidad de Florida/IFAS.  El Dr. Arnold Schumann presento un programa acerca de fertilización y yo pensé sería una buena idea compartir parte de su presentación y expandir en algunos de los puntos.

Durante su presentación el Dr. Schumann nos recordó de las cuatros “R” de mayordomía de nutriente para Las Mejores Prácticas de Gerencia.  Estas “R” son:

1. Use el Correcto Recurso de Nutrientes
2. Apliqué  la proporción Correcta.
3. Apliqué al tiempo Correcto.
4. Aplique a la área Correcta.

Pues, vamos a expandir un poco en la forma Correcta de hacer estas cosas.

El Recurso Correcto indica que hay una diferencia en como el fertilizante es hecho.   Hay múltiples de recursos para cada macro, secundario y componentes micro nutriente entre la mezcla de fertilizante.  Hay de liberación rápida, liberaciones lentas y liberación controlada para muchos nutrientes disponibles en el mercado.  Asegúrese que sepa lo que hay en la bolsa de fertilizante y cual nivel de liberación  con el propósito de mejoramiento del crecimiento de su cultivo, rendimiento y retorno.  Cuidadosamente considere el recurso de estos materiales ya que esto determinara lo disponible y resultado o crecimiento del cultivo.

La Proporción Correcta indica que hay un mínimo o máxima cantidad que debe ser aplicada.  Demasiado fertilizante es un desperdicio de dinero y muy poco fertilizante también es un desperdicio ya que no tendrá el resultado o rendimiento que necesita para máxima sus ganancias. Puede ser tentado cortar la proporción un poco para bajar el costo pero si impedirá la planta de los nutrientes necesario no recibirá el resultado superior lo cual le costar ganancia en el futuro.

Resista el deseo ser centavos sabios y dólar ignorante.  Esto es especialmente cierto con productos de liberación controlada ya que son diseñadas para durar más que los materiales tradicionales y deber y asi debe ser si alimenta por un periodo largo necesitara más “alimentos en despensa”.  En muchas ocasiones he visto cultivadores disminuir la proporción del producto de liberación controlada y luego quejarse que no duro lo suficiente  o no tuvieron los resultados esperado.

El Tiempo Correcto puede ser velar el clima para el potencial de lluvia que puede ser perjudicial para la aplicación de químicas de fertilizante de liberación rápida pero también el tiempo para su cultivo en particular.  Antes de florecer o después de la cosecha todos necesitan ser considerado cuando haga su aplicación.  Acuérdese también considerar el nivel de cosecha, si fue una cosecha bastante, pesada puede necesitar aumentar la proporción para dar al árbol suficiente para recupera y prepararse para el próximo año.  Debe considerar su proporción anual y la aplicación prevé de tal forma que su alimentación es suficiente para el año entero y no solo una aplicación.

El Lugar Correcto significa estar seguro su equipo de aplicación o proceso está correctamente ajustado para aplicar el material para el área designada. Si usted calibra correctamente (Proporción Correcta) pero su equipo de aplicación no está ajustado para aplicar al área correcta, ¡es en vano! Asegúrese que su regador está operando correctamente y está echando a la zona designada para su cultivo; si no está perdiendo su tiempo.

Creo todo gerente profesional sabe la información proveída pero encuentro que ayuda revisar lo básico.  Aun el mejor jugador de futbol ¡practica los fundamentales!
