There’s an old adage among turf managers that grass grows by the inch and dies by the foot. The double entendre is priceless to me! Managing traffic on sports fields is one of the most effective tools a turf manager can use to increase their chance of success. Easier said than done, right? However, there are some things you can do to improve your chance of success.

Shift fields within the boundaries of your fences. Below is an excellent example from Jerad Minnick when he was working for the Maryland Soccerplex:

They were able to shift the lacrosse goal mouths from side to side within the space available. Soccer and Women’s lacrosse have variable dimensions which allow this to be possible. Men’s lacrosse, however, has firm field dimensions. This doesn’t mean you can’t manage traffic on a men’s lacrosse field though. Painting an extra crease in an area outside the playing field and requiring this crease be used for goalie warm ups will limit the wear in the crease area on the playing surface.

Football stadiums are a different story, however, the fixed goalposts guarantee that the majority of the wear will occur right down the middle of the field. You can still manage the wear in the bench areas and where you enter and exit with your equipment, however. While I was at the University of Georgia we didn’t allow cart traffic on the sidelines, with the exception of the trainer’s emergency cart, and even that was required to be on the visitor’s sideline for practices and scrimmages, and we changed the field gate through which we entered with equipment every week.

If we can agree that grass grows by the inch and dies by the foot everything a turf manager can do to limit those feet can only help to improve our playing surfaces. Manejo de Trafico
