School Bus“School Days, School Days…” It’s hard to believe that pencils and backpacks are just around the corner and soon we’ll be saying goodbye to summer sun and fun. Even though it’s still a few weeks away (actually much sooner for some of us), it’s not too early to begin preparing for the upcoming school year. For those of you who have children entering kindergarten, here are a few helpful tips as you begin the academic adventure:

  • Most schools will have a “Kindergarten Round Up” or “Open House” as a form or registration. During this time, you will probably be asked to provide the following information:
  • Legal certificate of birth date which shows parents’ names
  • Physical examination within 12 months of registration (called the “Gold” form in Florida)
  • Certification of Immunization (called the “Blue” form in Florida)
  • Two proofs of residency
  • In most southern states, children must be 5 years or older before September 1 of the school year.

If you’re unsure of what you will need for your Kindergartner’s registration, call your local school board or log onto their website for more information.

For those parents who already have children in school, it’s never too late to think about saving for their future college education. The state in which you live might also provide a pre-paid college plan, for example Florida residents may log onto www.florida529plans.com/savings/index.html.

Alabama residents may log onto http://www.treasury.state.al.us/website/pact_brochure/pact_welcome.html.

South Carolina residents may log onto http://www.savingforcollege.com/compare_529_plans/?plan_question_ids%5B%5D=2&page=compare_plan_questions.

To find if your state has a prepaid college plan, log onto any search engine and enter “prepaid college plan (your state)”.
